Smuggled gold worth almost Rs 2 crores was seized from the Bir Tikendrajit Imphal International Airport on Sunday. Two individuals including a coach driver of Indigo Airlines, involved in the act were arrested.
A release issued by the Ministry of Finance stated that acting upon reliable information, officials of Anti-Smuggling Unit, Customs Division of Imphal went to the departure terminal of the airport where security staff of Indigo airlines had detained one passenger and one coach driver.
A total of 19 gold biscuits were recovered from them and officials detected 10 gold biscuits of foreign origin. Upon investigation and interrogation, officials recovered another 9 gold biscuits.
The accused have been arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act and further investigations are on.
An official statement from Indigo said, “An IndiGo employee discovered a passenger carrying yellow metal on flight 6E 6716 operating between Imphal to Kolkata. A ground staff from a partner agency was found to be involved with the passenger. We are conducting an internal inquiry and will be taking necessary action. We are fully cooperating and assisting the concerned authorities in this investigation.”
