Manipur: Guv Anusuiya Uikey condemns use of ‘excessive force’ on agitating students

Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey today condemned the use of force on protesting students and said that such an incident should have never happened. Governor Uikey said this while visiting the residences of the 2 students whose pictures went viral showing them dead.

Briefing newspersons, Governor Uikey said, “There is anger among the students after the incident, but whatever they want to do (protest) it should be done peacefully, parents have also urged the same. I came to know that lot of students have been injured around 200 or so while some of them are still in the hospitals. There should have been no firing on the students since they were protesting peacefully. There will be inquiry and whoever has done it is very wrong. This was not right such actions were taken against the students.”

The Governor also urged the parents to make their wards understand that protest has to be done peacefully and not take law into their hands.

“Please make them understand,” Governor Uikey urged the parents.

Governor Uikey said that everything will be clear in the probe by the 2-member Committee consituted by the Manipur DGP to look into allegations of use of excessive force while controlling protestors. The Governor assured that anyone found to be involved will have to face action.

Massive protests erupted in the Imphal Valley after students took to the streets to protest the death of the 2 students dead. The pictures went viral after the Manipur government lifted the ban on internet on September 23, triggering the protests. Situation had escalated at different locations as security forces resorted to use of force to prevent further escalation.
