Despite all odds, the Manipur government is making all out efforts to compensate the loss of education suffered by the students in the wake of the recent unrest. As part of such efforts, the state government has mechanised a plan to ensure that students who are now taking shelter in relief camps do not have to bear the brunt.
Textbooks, other study materials, as well as sports materials are now being provided to the 4700 students at the relief camps. The initiative kicked off from Residential School in Imphal West and Ideal Girls’ College in Imphal East, where relief camps are being opened.
Speaking to Northeast Live, L. Nandakumar, Director of Education (Schools) informed that Chief Minister N Biren Singh has issued necessary directives in this regard. He said,”At present in Manipur there are a little more than 4700 students gathered at different relief camps. We are so concerned about the welfare of the students. As per instructions given by Chief Minister and Education minister our dept is trying all our best to make up or compensate the learning loss of our students.”
“Since the notebooks and textbooks of all the students have already been burnt, we are distributing textbooks, notebooks, pen, uniforms and even the sports materials free of cost to the students gathered at different relief camps in Manipur.
We have collected the data, we have bifurcated it classwise and we have distributed the textbooks classwise to all the students in the relief camps,” the Director of Education (Schools) added.
Meanwhile, the government has also arranged for special classes for the students at the relief camps. Referring to this, L. Nandakumar said, “We are selecting for example these days summer vacation is going on, we are arranging some volunteer teachers so that some classes or tutions or even coaching classes are carried out in these camps.”
On the other hand the Director of Education (Schools) also mentioned about the state government’s move to allow one time transfer and admission for students studying in Class 9-12 in schools they prefer.
L. Nandakumar said, “As per the norm of Board of Secondary Education Manipur and Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur a student once registered in Class 9 or 11 cannot transfer in Class 10 or 12. But this time since the situation is a little different from the previous ones, any student can transfer anywhere else, because this restriction imposed by MBOSE and COHSEM is removed. So, students can transfer from any school to any other in Manipur.
Once the summer vacation is over we will put all out efforts so that emphasis is given to those students studying in Class 9, 10, 11 and 12.”
