Manipur Govt to set temporary detention camps near Indo-Myanmar border to curb influx of illegal immigrants

The Manipur Government will be setting up temporary detention camps near the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur, to provide shelter on humanitarian grounds to those who had fled Myanmar, due to the ongoing crisis in the neighboring country.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has informed that the temporary detention camps will be set up to keep the refugees together and ensure that they do not mix up with the locals. Once the crisis in Myanmar gets settled, they will be deported back.

He also informed that the government is deputing security personnel along the border areas to ensure safety and security for the people.

Meanwhile, after the airstrikes by the Myanmar Military near Manipur’s border, Manipur Government officials along with a Cabinet sub-committee to check the inflow of illegal immigrants in the state will be visiting the border to check influx of illegal immigrants and to ensure that there is no illegal entry of Myanmarese towards Manipur.

State Education Minister Thounaojam Basantakumar who is also a member of the cabinet sub-committee said that they will start touring border areas tomorrow.

He further said that by creating shelter facilities for those fleeing Myanmar, the state government is ensuring the state is not affected by the influx.

When asked about NRC and the state population commission, he assured that the government is up for NRC and will put best possible efforts for fruitful conclusions.

Currently, it is in the stage of discussion about sending a proposal for NRC implementation to the centre, he added.
