Manipur Govt: MHA extends biometrics collection deadline by 6 months

The deadline for completing the collection of biographic and biometric details of illegal migrants in Manipur has been extended by another 6 months. The Manipur Government in a statement said that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has agreed to extend the time period till March 31, 2024.

Initially the timeline to complete the entire exercise is September 30 (tomorrow). The development comes after the state government including the MLAs of the state requested the Centre to extend the deadline so as to capturing of the data of illegal migrants from Myanmar can be ensured, especially in context of the prevailing situation.

The MHA, however, has directed the N Biren Singh government to take up appropriate steps so that the entire exercise is completed within the revised timeframe-till March 31, next year.

On May 29, this year the Centre had directed the government to quickly prepare a plan and initiate the biometric collection of the illegal migrants and complete the exercise by the end of September.

This indeed is a big development since probe by security agencies are underway to ascertain the involvement of illegal migrants in the unrest that erupted since May 3 in Manipur.

Not only this, on August 9 Union Home Minister Amit Shah had informed the Parliament that the violence in the state was triggered by illegal migrants from Myanmar, who had crossed over to the Indian territory in Manipur.
