Manipur govt condemns action of security forces in Pallel, announces compensation for victims who lost their homes

The Manipur cabinet today strongly condemned the ‘high-handedness’ of central security forces to control civilians during a scuffle that broke out in Pallel on Friday. The cabinet further resolved to apprise the matter to the Centre and discussed about initiating proper action if security forces resort to such acts in the future.
At least one person was killed and several others injured in firing between security forces and armed men around Monloi village near Pallel in Tengnoupal district yesterday (Friday).
After the incident, a scuffle broke out between locals and forces as protesters tried to remove barricades and barbed wires put up by the security personnel and marched towards the Assam Rifles headquarters in Pallel. During the scuffle one Assam Rifles jawan suffered injuries as a shot was fired allegedly from the crowd.
Among the other key decisions, the cabinet decided to hand over compensation to families who have lost their homes in the violence that erupted since May 3.
Briefing the media about the decisions taken in the cabinet meeting, owners of Pucca houses to get Rs 10 lakh each, owners of semi-Pucca houses to get Rs 7 lakh each and Rs 5 Lakh each to those who owned Kutcha houses
The Minister added that initially, half of the compensation amount will be given to victims and the remaining amount will be given once the house construction work begins.
Besides, the cabinet has also decided to construct new houses at respective native places of displaced victims whose houses were torched or destroyed in the ongoing unrest.
The new houses will be built under Permanent Housing Scheme. Sapam Ranjan Singh further stated that as per police reports, altogether 4,806 houses and properties were destroyed in the violence.
