Manipur Cabinet to be in Suspended Animation? State Headed Towards President’s Rule?

Sources told Northeast Live that CM Biren Singh and the MLAs could meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya today

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, accompanied by ruling alliance MLAs, are likely to meet state Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya after returns to the state later today.

This has triggered intense speculation whether the Chief Minister will propose keeping the Manipur Assembly in suspended animation. CM Singh has called for another Cabinet meeting today evening. This will be the second Cabinet meeting in less than 24 hours.

Talks about this proposal emerged after the emergency cabinet meeting late last night where several ministers reportedly discussed the pros and cons of recommending keeping the state assembly in suspended animation. If the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues take the final decision on this, Manipur may come under President’s Rule.

However, if the assembly is in suspended animation then the government can be revived if needed. Northeast Live is trying to contact the ruling political leadership for details.

The idea of putting the assembly in suspended animation came up in view of the escalating violence in the state where sophisticated drones and long range improvised missiles systems were used by attackers that killed a few civilians and injured several others.

The renewed violence also seems to be having a spiralling effect with reports of a fire fight coming in from Jiribam along Manipur’s border with southern Assam where 9 people belonging to both sides, Kukis and Meities, are reported killed and several injured. Intense firing continues even now.
So far three people have died in the drone and rocket attacks which began since September 1.
