Even as Jiribam continues to be volatile, an extortion attempt was foiled by Manipur Police in the district on Sunday night.

At least five members of the banned militant outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (Nongdrenkhomba) were nabbed in Kakching district, which had allegedly come to kidnap one person for extortion purpose.

The miscreants reportedly attempted to abduct an unknown person from Kakching Khunou with the intent of extorting money.

The development comes after security forces continue to carry out combing operations to apprehend the culprits involved in the ambush on CRPF and Manipur Police personnel in South Jiribam on Sunday morning, which left one CRPF personnel dead and 2 Manipur Police personnel injured.

Meanwhile, the arrested persons were identified as Soibam Lanchanba Meitei (25), Soibam Manoj Singh (27), Heisnam Dipak Meitei (39), Nameirakpam Nelson Singh (20) and Nongthombam Leishemba (23).

A sizeable amount of arms and ammunition was also seized from the possession of the arrested persons. These include two pistols, 5 live rounds of ammo, 3 camouflage uniforms, a four-wheeler without number plates, among others.

A case has been registered for further investigation.
