The Manipur Police soon swung into action and could swiftly make the arrests besides recovering a consignment of arms and ammunition.
Manipur Police have arrested 6 persons in connection with the attack on the 5th Indian Reserve Battalion post at Chingarel in Imphal East and looting arms.
According to the Manipur Police, the 5th IRB post was attacked and a huge cache of arms and ammunition were looted by the mob on late night of February 13.
However, Manipur Police successfully recovered some of the items which were believed to be looted from the IRB facility.
In a post on X, the Manipur Police informed, “In connection with the incident of arms looting case of 5th IRB, Chingarel, Imphal East by unruly mob on the night of 13.02.2024, Manipur Police have arrested 06 (six) persons on 14.02.2024 and they have been remanded into police custody by judicial magistrate.
Further, 04 (four) Insas Rifles, 01 (one) AK Ghatak 2, magazines of SLR and 16 small boxes of 9 mm ammunition which are suspected to have been looted from 5th IRB have also been recovered by Manipur Police.
On the other hand, 1 person died and 3 others were injured after an irate mob tried to attack the Manipur Police Training College (MPTC) at Pangei in Impal East.
Informing about the incident the Manipur Police posted on X and stated, “On 13.02.2024, in order to repel violent mobs including armed miscreants trying to storm MPTC, Pangei, security forces resorted to use of legal force. During the incident, 01(one) person succumbed to injuries and 3(three) persons sustained injuries.”
Worth mentioning that the CBI on January 15 had filed a chargesheet against five people in a case of looting of arms and ammunition from Manipur Police Training College (MPTC) at Pangei in Imphal on May 4 last year, exactly a day after violence erupted in the state.
The charge sheet was filed before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Kamrup (Metro) in Guwahati.
The fresh attack at the MPTC assumes a lot of significance.
