Manipur: 2nd edition of Olympic Games begins in Imphal

Governor La Ganesan inaugurated the games and took a salute from contingents of 16 districts as well as two additional contingents of men and women polo players.
After a hiatus of 34 years, Manipur Olympic Games began today in Imphal with a function held at Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest living polo ground in the world.
The second edition of the Games will continue till August 30 throughout different venues across the state and participants will compete in as many as 34 disciplines including indigenous games and sports.
The organizing committee has given priority to holding the Manipur State Games to identify sports persons who excelled in the meet and can be given further training and shortlisted for the upcoming 36th National Games 2022, which is scheduled to be held in Gujarat from September 27 to October 10.
While the main thrust of the Manipur Olympic Games is the promotion of sports and sportspersons, vibrant cultural and musical performances by different cultural troupes can be witnessed during the inaugural ceremony.
Meanwhile, Manipur Governor La Ganesan inaugurated the games and took a salute from contingents of 16 districts as well as two additional contingents of men and women polo players.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Ganesan exuded confidence that Manipur will continue to produce prominent sportspersons at the national as well as international levels in the coming years.
He also emphasized the importance of taking part in such games, which fosters unity and discipline among the people, especially the youths.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced that the Manipur Olympic Games will be christened as Manipur State Games from next year and necessary budget allocation will be made.
