Lack of Strict Measures Led to Demographic Changes, Crisis in Manipur: Former CM N Biren Singh

Singh said that the Indo-Myanmar border was never taken seriously by policymakers.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has criticised previous governments for failing to address illegal migration across the Indo-Myanmar border, warning that the crisis unfolding in the state could have been prevented with stricter measures.

Singh pointed to past incidents, such as the detention of 28 Myanmar nationals found with fake Aadhaar cards, as evidence of a deeper, ongoing problem that has long been ignored.

He said that while the Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Bangladesh borders have been under strict surveillance, the Indo-Myanmar border was never taken seriously by policymakers.

“Had there been stricter measures earlier, the demographic changes we see today and the resulting crisis could have been prevented,” the former CM stated, highlighting the growing concerns over security and demographic shifts in Manipur.

He further questioned why the issue had been overlooked for decades and demanded accountability from those responsible for the current situation. “Who will take responsibility for the consequences India now faces?” he asked.

Earlier on Friday, the former CM reiterated that Manipur’s land and identity are under threat and called for immediate action to safeguard the state’s security and demographic stability.

He pointed out that Manipur, with only 3 Members of Parliament, lacks significant representation in the nation’s highest decision-making body but has always maintained its pride and resilience.

He also questioned, urging authorities to take serious note and intensify efforts to detect and deport illegal immigrants from the state.

N Biren Singh who recently resigned as Chief Minister of Manipur following pressure from discontented BJP MLAs demanding a change in leadership reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to addressing the issue despite stepping down as Chief Minister.
