Even as sporadic incidents of firing and arson continue to take place in different parts of Manipur and peace and normalcy remain a far cry even after a month of violence that first broke out on May 3, women from the Kuki community staged a silent protest outside Union Home Minister, Amit Shah’s residence in New Delhi today, demanding restoration of peace and normalcy in conflict-torn Manipur.

Holding placards, the protestors marched towards the Union Home Minister’s residence before they were stopped by the security personnel posted outside the residence.

“Article 356 not 355”, “Kuki lives matter”, “Amit Shah you promised us peace”, besides others were written on the placards as the women protesters staged a silent protest outside the Home Minister’s residence.

Back in Manipur, tension is running high between different communities residing in the state. Despite the visit of the Union Home Minister and several appeals for peace and harmony, peace remains elusive in the northeastern state bordering Myanmar.

Encounters with security forces continue to take place in Manipur despite the presence of around 40,000 Army and paramilitary troopers on the ground, a trend that has kept the state government on tenterhooks.
