Manipur CM N Biren Singh is meeting Governor Anusuiya Uikey at 1 PM today amid strong speculations that he might step down
Amid the ongoing violence in Manipur, speculations are rife that Chief Minister N Biren Singh is contemplating stepping down from the office of CM. Adding to the strong speculations is the Chief Minister’s meeting with Governor Anusuiya Uikey at 1 PM today.
Sources close to the Chief Minister told Northeast Live that the CM is very upset about the recent turn of events and that despite the best efforts of the CM incidents of violence, arson, firing, people out on the streets causing unrest is going on.
In fact, around 10-10.30PM last night, several of Biren Singh Cabinet’s ministers met the CM, drafted the resignation letter and along with CM Singh, several of the ministers present signed the letter.
If CM Singh resigns, then the Manipur Assembly will be kept in animated suspension and President Rule will be imposed, sources said.
According to another version, it could be that CM Singh might not tender his resignation to the Governor. He might just brief the Governor about the situation in the state and steps being taken to quell the violence that claimed 3 lives in just the last 24 hours.
Intense pressure is mounting on CM Singh not to step down. Civil Society organisations and his supporters as asking him not to step down but to stand firm.
Large number of Imas (mother in Manipuri) and supporters gathered in front of Nupi-Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal near Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s bungalow and raised slogans asking the CM not to resign.
Women from various Ima organisations started gathering from around 10:30 am in front of Nupi-Lal memorial complex hearing the news that CM Singh might tender his resignation.
Speaking to the media Ima Leirikleima said they are strongly against the resignation and the present situation in the state cannot be fixed improved by his resignation. “This is the time for Chief Minister N Biren Singh to stand firm,” she said.
