NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma today said the Commission had reached out thrice in the last 3 months to authorities in Manipur
Has the revelation of National Commission for Women punched holes on Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s stand that he and his government were not aware of the horrific incident related to the sexual assault and naked parade of women till the video of the same surfaced?
Chairperson of NCW, Rekha Sharma today said that the Commission had reached out thrice in the last three months to authorities in Manipur over incidents of violence against women.
She was responding to reports in a section of the media that claimed the Commission had on June 12 received a complaint about the incident of two women being paraded naked on May 4 in the ethnic violence-hit North eastern state but had not taken any action. The May 4 video surfaced online on July 19.
Sharma said that while multiple complaints were received, there was no specific complaint about the incident related to the viral video. Sharma added that DO letters were sent to the Manipur Chief Secretary and the DGP in May and again in June.
Sharma denied receiving any specific report of the incident and said the NCW took suo motu cognisance of women being paraded naked after the video surfaced and sought explanation from authorities on the matter.
However, the NCW chief said that she had received other complaints regarding women issues and for that she had reached out thrice to authorities in Manipur but no response was received from them.
