CADA seeks white paper from Manipur govt over move to lift liquor ban

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s announcement of the government’s plan to legalize the sale and consumption of alcohol in the state has received backlash.

The Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) accused the government of being too optimistic about the proposed venture.

Speaking to the media yesterday, CADA secretary general Geetchandra Mangang said that the Chief Minister’s statement in the assembly will promote black marketing of alcohol and further encourage alcoholism among the people.

He questioned whether the Manipur government, by lifting the prohibition on the sale and consumption of liquor, will be able to curb the alcohol-induced crimes and domestic violence in the state and control adulteration.

While strongly condemning the statement of the Chief Minister, Geetchandra demanded the government to produce a white paper on the likely income and revenue and other merits and demerits of lifting the ban.
