Tensions flared in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Sunday after the residence of Askar Ali Makakmayum, president of the BJP Minority Morcha in the state, was vandalised and set on fire by an angry mob angered by his support for the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The incident occurred in Lilong Haoreibi Sambrukhong under Thoubal district, where an angry mob stormed Ali’s house in the evening, damaging property before setting it ablaze.
Askar Ali had publicly backed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025, which was recently passed in both Houses of Parliament and signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu.
Soon after the bill was passed on April 5, Ali in a Facebook post urged citizens to avoid politicising the issue and expressed his support for the legislation.
“WAKF Amendment Bill da Politics Touganu. Welcome Bill, We Support WAB,”. Meaning “Do not do politics on Waqf Amendment Bill. We welcome Bill. We support WAB,” he posted on Facebook.

However, following the violent backlash, Ali issued an apology in a video on Facebook. He expressed regret for his earlier remarks and appealed to the central government to repeal the law.

There have been no official reports of injuries or arrests so far.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, aims to reform the management and oversight of Waqf properties across the country, updating the Waqf Act of 1995. The bill faced stiff opposition when first introduced in August last year, prompting its referral to a Joint Parliamentary Committee.
Since its was passed, the law has drawn criticism from several political and religious leaders.
