The Cabinet Sub-Committee constituted by the N Biren Singh government has expedited the efforts to settle the Myanmar immigrants who have entered Manipur seeking shelter.
Efforts are on a war footing as the Cabinet sub-committee has so far identified multiple locations for rehabilitating the Myanmar immigrants on humanitarian grounds temporarily.
Cabinet sub-committee Chairman Tribal Affairs Minister Letpao Haokip accompanied by committee members- Education and Law Minister Th. Basanta Kumar Singh, Water Resources minister Awangbow Newmai today inspected areas at Singngat in Churachandpur district to set up a shelter home for the Myanmar immigrants.
As per plans, the government has decided to convert an existing facility of 4 barack type quarters into a shelter home at Singngat.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Cabinet sub-committee chairman, Letpao Haokip said,”Because of war they have fled to neighbouring countries. We are providing them a shelter home at Singngat Teachers Barack Type Quarter. Our govt is ready to provide fooding, accomodation and even healthcare. We will be giving them I-cards, so that they can be deported after the war ends in Myanmar.”
Meanwhile, Letpao Haokip also allayed apprehensions prevailing among the Myanmar immigrants that they will be arrested and put to jail. The Cabinet sub-committee chairman said,”So everybody is requested to come out voluntarily, this time we are helping you, not arresting You. Burmese in Moreh are in all apprehensions that they will be arrested and put to jail.
As a Chairman of sub committee I want to assure You that You will not be arrested and put to jail, but instead we are providing You everything, fooding, shelter and also healthcare.”
Letpao Haokip also responded to a query on as to how the government will identify the Myanmar immigrants who can enter Manipur every now and then since the Internation Border is very porous.
Haokip maintained that the Manipur government will be zero tolerant against the violators.
Haokip in this regard said,”They have to come voluntarily, otherwise if anybody found without any proper identity, they will be caught and arrested. Those people who come out voluntarily and stay at shelter home they will be free.”
The Cabinet Sub-Committee Chairman, also informed that around 129 Myanmar nationals have been lodged at detention centres so far, for not following the rules and regulations.
Earlier, the Cabinet Sub-Committee had decided to setup shelter homes for the Myanmar refugees at Haolenphai village of Moreh sub-division in Tengnoupal district and Gamphajol village in Chandel district.
