Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has returned to power in Tripura with an absolute majority winning 32 seats. The race for the CM’s post has begun. Though incumbent CM Manik Saha is the favourite and is in all likelihood going to be sworn in for a second consecutive term, Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik too is said to be in the race.

State BJP leaders and newly elected MLAs are holding a crucial meeting in Agartala where the issue of deciding on a chief minister is likely to be discussed. The meeting is also being attended by Pratima Bhoumik and Manik Saha.

In case Pratima Bhoumik is elected as chief minister of the state, she will become the first woman Chief Minister not only of Tripura but in the history of the Northeast.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik reacting to the rumours, stated that she will follow whatever instructions are given by the party.

Bhoumik is a hard-core BJP leader who has been involved in politics since her college days.

Manik Saha is a dental surgeon-turned-politician who is a relatively new entrant into the world of politics.

When there was a crisis and the party had to remove former CM Biplab Kumar Deb, Manik Saha was chosen to be the Chief Minister.

From that point on until now, he has actually handled affairs quite well and has been a friendly face and accepted by the people. This has extended Manik Saha’s favour among the top leaders of the BJP.

Bhoumik won the Dhanpur seat by a margin of 3,500 votes.
