LS Polls 2024: Voting in NE on Apr 19, Counting on Jun 4

Voting for the 14 LS seats in Assam will be held in 3 phases on Apr 19, Apr 26 and May 7

The Election Commission of India announced the dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Elections for the 543 seats would be held in 7 phases from April 19 to June 1. Counting of votes will take place on June 4.

Lok Sabha polls for the 14 seats in Assam will be held in three phases
• Apr 19 – 5 SEATS
• Apr 26- 5 SEATS
• May 7 – 4 SEATS

Kaziranga, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh and Jorhat will go to polls on April 19.

Darrang-Udalguri, Diphu, Karimganj, Silchar and Nagaon will go to polls on April 26 and Kokrajhar Dhubri, Barpeta and Guwahati will go to polls on May 7.

Single phase polling on April 19 will take place for the 2 seats each in Meghalaya (Shillong and Tura) and Arunahchal East and Arunachal West in Arunachal Pradesh.

Polling for Inner Manipur will be on April 19 and for Out Manipur will be on April 26.

Polling for Tripura East will be on April 26 and for Tripura West will be on April 19.

Polling for the lone Lok Sabha seats in Mizoram, Nagalnd and Sikkim will be held on April 19.

The Lok Sabha has a total of 545 seats but election is held for 543 seats only the The remaining two seats are filled by nomination of representatives of the Anglo-Indian Community if the President feels that this community has not been represented adequately. Out of the elective seats, 79 are reserved for SC and 41 for ST.

Of the 543 seats, the Northeast has 25 seats –
Assam has 14 seats.
Arunachal Pradesh has 2 seats – Arunachal East and Arunachal West.
Manipur has 2 seats – Manipur Inner and Manipur Outer
Meghalaya has 2 seats – Shillong and Tura.
Tripura has 2 seats – Tripura East and Tripura West
Mizoram Nagaland and Sikkim has one seat each.

In 2019 LS polls in Assam, BJP won 9 seats, Congress won 3, AIUDF won 1 and one was Independent.
All the 4 seats – 2 in Tripura and 2 in Arunachal, were won by BJP.

The lone Mizoram LS seat was won by the then ruling Mizo National Front (MNF).

The lone Nagaland LS seat was won by ruling NDPP’s Tokheho Yepthomi in 2019.

The lone Sikkim LS seat was won by Indra Hung Subba of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.

In Meghalaya, Congress won the Shillong LS seat and ruling NPP won the Tura seat in 2019.

In Manipur, the Outer Manipur seat was won by National Peoples Front (NPF)’s Lorho S Pfoze and the Inner Manipur seat was won by BJP’s Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh.
