College student allegedly gang raped in Tripura; prime accused arrested

A sensational case of gang rape has come to light in Tripura. In some prompt action, Tripura Police arrested the prime accused and a co-accused.

According to the police, the victim and the accused knew eachother. The prime accused has been identified as Gautam Sharma, while his associate has been identified as Sudip Chetri.

West Tripura district SP Kiran Kumar briefing about the incident said, “We received the complaint yesterday that a girl has been raped by a person and immediately we registered a case in Amtali police station under 376 IPC and we arrested the man named in the FIR. He is in police custody now. During his interrogation he revealed that there were some more persons who were involved in the incident. We have arrested another accused. Investigation is going on and we are interrogating both of them.”

Without divulging much details about the incident, the West Tripura district SP informed, “The girl new the prime accused for 5 months. They sort of had an affair. He called her at around 4:30 PM. He was apparently with his friends. Then just they roamed around the town and then he apparently raped her in the vehicle after reaching near his house in an empty ground.”

“We have formed a strong team and we are investigating. Whatever comes up we will take strict action and arrest all the culprits who are involved in this case,” SP Kumar said.

CPIM-led organisations and student bodies took to the streets today and staged demonstration in front of the Tripura Police headquarters demanding arrest of the perpetrators besides providing free treatment to the victim and security for her family.
