The Chakma Autonomous District Council in Mizoram will be going to polls in May this year. As per the State Election Commission, the dates for the elections to the 20-member district council will be announced by the end of this month.

The State Election Commission published the final rolls for the Chakma council on April 5. There are 35,885 voters, including 17,677 women who are expected to exercise their franchise in 70 polling stations within the council. Of the 20 constituencies, Kamalanagar ‘N’ has the highest number of voters at 3,533, while the Fultuli constituency has the least number of voters at 1,305.

It may be mentioned that in a significant development in December last year, Governor’s rule was imposed in the CADC for 6 months owing to politcal instability. Following this, the DC of Lawngtlai was appointed as caretaker on behalf of the Governor to exercise such functions or powers vested in or exercisable by the CADC.

It was a hung assembly if one speaks about the CADC elections in April 2018. The Mizo National Front (MNF) won eight seats, Congress bagged six seats and the BJP won five.

However, instability began when the BJP, which won five seats decided to form the government with arch-rival Congress party (at the centre) which bagged seven seats, rather than its NDA ally the MNF having eight MDCs.

Worth mentioning, 5 governments in the CADC had been toppled since Shanti Jiban Chakma of the BJP was sworn in as Chief Executive Member (CEM) on May 4, 2018, after being elected leader of the United Legislature Party (ULP), formed by the BJP and the Congress.
