A 107-year-old Buddhist monk was burnt alive following a massive fire at a Buddhist temple in Longpuighat village in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district.

Reports from Lawngtlai said that though the cause of the inferno on Wednesday was yet to be determined, an electric short circuit was suspected and the fire started from the residence of the deceased monk. Five buildings were gutted in the fire.

Three Buddhist monks used to look after the temple and one of them was not in the temple premises when the fire broke out and one monk was in the compound as a guest.

Officials said that properties worth around Rs 3 crore were lost in the arson.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
