Border trade with Mizoram a top priority: Bangladesh Commerce Minister Munshi

The Bangladeshi government is giving top priority to a border trade between Mizoram and Bangladesh, informed Bangladesh commerce minister Tipu Munshi on Monday.

Addressing a press conference at a site for Integrated Check Post, Munshi said that the Bangladeshi government is committed to the commencement and execution of cross-border trade with Mizoram.

As an outcome of the meeting held between Tipu Munshi, Minister of Commerce, Bangladesh and Dr R Lalthangliana, Minister of Ministry of Commerce and Industries in Mizoram Government came together with a joint statement stating that After careful examination of the possibility and viability of setting up of Border Haat at Silsury (India) – Sajek (Bangladesh), the Government of Bangladesh may convey formal approval through the diplomatic channel.

In order to synchronize efforts to formalize trade on both sides, the Mizoram Government proposed that the Government of Bangladesh may explore the possibility and viability of setting up matching infrastructure in the form of ICP at Thegamukh, adjacent to the ICP being developed at Kawrpuichhuah. Upon receipt of a written request through the diplomatic channel from the Mizoram Government, this proposal will be forwarded to the relevant Ministry concerned.

The Mizoram Government proposed that in order to upgrade connectivity, the Government of Bangladesh may consider the possibility of constructing a road of 17 Kms from Chhota Horin to Thegamukh. The request from Mizoram Government will be sent to the Ministry concerned.

The Mizoram Government requested that Khawthlangtuipui (Karnaphuli) river may be included in one of the routes on the India – Bangladesh Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade. The request of the Mizoram side would be placed to the relevant Ministry.

The Mizoram Government stated that the efforts will be made from the Government of Mizoram to expedite the work on the proposed 660m River Bridge that connects the two countries across the river Khawthlangtuipui/Karnaphuli. The relevant ministry of Bangladesh may communicate, upon receiving communication from the Ministry of Commerce, its position regarding the construction of such a bridge.

It will be an endeavour of both sides to capitalize on the potentiality of a thriving border trade regime through the establishment of critical trade infrastructure at viable locations.

Bangladesh Commerce Minister also said they are here to make border trade with the state of Mizoram, he said they have products to export items such as cement and steel, etc., Minister said that they also wanted to import ginger, chillies, turmeric and cubic stone from Mizoram. “We have already imported cubic stone from Bhutan and Bihar so we wanted to import from Mizoram which will be cheaper and near to the border”, he added.

Minister said that he will talk to Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina regarding the border trade with India through Mizoram, he also said that he met the Chief Minister of Mizoram Zoramthanga and talked about water connection through Chittagong seaport from Mizoram.
