ULFA-I Bomb Threat on I-Day in Assam: NIA to Take Over 2 of the 10 Cases

Assam Police will continue to handle the remaining 8 cases, said Assam DGP GP Singh.

The Assam Police have decided to hand over two of the 10 cases related to the planting of explosives in several parts of the state by the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) on Independence Day to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The NIA will investigate the cases involving the recovery of explosives in Guwahati and Lakhimpur, while, Assam Police will continue to handle the remaining 8 cases, said Assam DGP GP Singh.

Speaking to media, DGP GP Singh said that the decision to involve the NIA aims to leverage the agency’s specialized capabilities in handling explosives-related investigations.

The DGP further said that the investigation into the cases is moving in the right direction and so far 4 persons who have been arrested from different parts of the state are being interrogated in Sivasagar. One of them has confessed to planting the explosive-like substances.

DGP GP Singh once again expressed confidence in cracking the case and arresting the culprits soon.

It may be mentioned that the ULFA-I in the mail on August 14 claimed that explosives had been planted in around 25 locations in Guwahati, Sivasagar, Lakua, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Laluk, Borghat, Nalbari, Tamulpur and Dibrugarh.

Following this, Assam Police had launched search operations across the state and recovered bomb-like materials from Satgaon and Last Gate,Pan Bazar (heart of the city and a busy locality) and Gandhi Mandap area of Guwahati and in Lakhimpur on August 15-16.

Additionally, there was utter panic and chaos at Guwahati’s City Centre Mall on Monday after a suspected bomb threat led to the sudden evacuation of shoppers and staff from the mall which is located few kilometres away from Dispur with the busy GS Road on one side and the Zoo Road (R G Barua Road) on the other.
