A B. Tech student from the Computer Science department studying at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has allegedly committed suicide.
The student who hails from Uttar Pradesh, was found dead in his room at the Brahmaputra Hostel in the IIT Guwahati campus. The body was discovered late last night by fellow students, who alerted campus authorities.
This is the second such incident reported from the campus in two months, raising concerns about students’ mental health and support systems at the prestigious institution.
Last month,, a boarder of Disang Hostel, also from Uttar Pradesh had died by suicide.
It is to be mentioned that in April this year, a 20-year-old first-year B Tech student from Bihar allegedly died by suicide at the prestigious institution.
A recent study has revealed that IITs, known for their academic excellence, also record a high rate of student suicides.
As many as 33 of 98 suicides in top higher education institutions over the past five years occurred at IITs, The Week reported quoting the Union Education Ministry data.
