At least five persons have been killed and several were left injured after the state of Assam was hit by heavy rains and storm amid Bihu celebrations.
Four women were killed in Tingkhong and Mora circle in Dibrugarh district of Upper Assam after a storm uprooted a bamboo tree under which the victims were taking refuge.
Meanwhile, one person died in Matia in Goalpara district after a bolt of lightning struck him.
Many houses have been heavily destroyed and road communication have been disrupted at many spots after uprooted trees fell and blocked the road.
According to reports, a total of 592 villages across Assam were hit by the storm ad 853 houses were completely damaged.
Earlier on April 14, the India Meteorological Department had issued an advisory and warned about heavy to very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya till April 18.
