Stability and Peace in Northeast will Depend on Bangladesh’s Next Government: Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the prevailing peace in the Northeastern region of India largely depends on the future government of Bangladesh.

CM Sarma expressed concerns that if Bangladesh’s next government adopts an anti-India stance, it could potentially lead to problems in the Northeast.

The Chief Minister said the exit of the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh might have direct implications on insurgency issues in the region.

“The insurgency situation in the Northeast might change. If the next government formed in Bangladesh is anti-India, we will definitely have a problem,” said CM Sarma.

CM Sarma however said that it’s too early to make any comments right now. The implications for India will only become clear once the electoral process in Bangladesh is completed.

“The election is yet to be held. Let the election be completed. Only after the election, will we know what type of government is being formed there and how it could affect us. You never know; the next government in Bangladesh might be more pro-India than the Sheikh Hasina government was. So, we have to wait and watch the developments in Bangladesh because they will have immediate repercussions in the Northeast,” he added.

Fresh elections in Bangladesh are expected to be held by November 2024 after Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign and the Jatiya Sangsad was dissolved and was replaced by an interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus amidst student protests in the country demanding reforming the quota system that reserves civil service jobs for specific groups, including descendants of 1971 war veterans.
