With some respite from the heavy rains which had continued in most parts of eastern Assam and Arunachal Pradesh for more than a week now, there are reports of large scale erosion by the Brahmaputra river and its major tributaries from various parts of the region.

One of the worst affected area are the villages under the Balijan Gaon Panchayat and Bindhakota Gaon Panchayat in Chabua revenue circle in Dibrugarh district. Villages like Rongmola and Tengabari Mirigaon have come under the impact of heavy erosion which started as the water level of the Dibru river and the Brahmaputra had started to recede marginally since there had not been any rain for the last 24 hours in the region.

These villages have been battling the onslaught of floods and erosion for the last couple of years. People are being forced to shift themselves from one place to another to escape from nature’s fury. Despite several requests and applications, 96 families who lost all their belongings are forced to stay in the riverine area without any proper accommodation. The authorities and the government are yet to come up with a proper relief and rehabilitation package for them.
