More than 100 Bangladeshi infiltrators have been arrested in Assam as the violence in Bangladesh continues, said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Despite tight security vigil along the international border, Bangladeshi nationals are seemingly making desperate attempts to cross over to the Indian side illegally through the porous portion of the border.
The latest arrest was made last night along the international border.
The arrested Bangladeshi infiltrator has been identified as Istaq Ahmed.
“Maintaining alert along the border, 1 illegal Bangladeshi national was apprehended by @assampolice today near the International border. The apprehended individual’s name is Istaq Ahmed. Over 100 illegal Bangladeshis have been arrested so far. Good job Team!,” CM Sarma posted on X.
On October 1, Assam Police, based on intelligence inputs arrested 14 illegal Bangladeshi nationals in South Salmara and Karimganj districts. Significantly, 9 of them were found carrying Indian Aadhaar cards.
On September 26, 17 Bangladeshis, including eight children, were pushed back after they were apprehended in Assam for allegedly entering India illegally.
Earlier, stating that illegal Bangladeshi infiltration issue has now become a national issue, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had advocated for a national-level National Register of Citizens (NRC).
