Northeastern Frontier Railways (NFR) will soon introduce a new mechanism in a bid to reduce incidents of elephants being hit by speeding trains. As part of this initiative the Northeastern Frontier Railways (NFR), has decided to introduce the state of the art Intrusion Detection System (IDS) particularly near the designated elephant corridors.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Sabyasachi De, the Chief Pblic Relations Officer (CPRO) of NF Railways, informed about the decision to install the IDS system.
Earlier, the system was installed in the Chalsa, Hasimsa section under Alipurduar divison and the Lumding, Hawaipur section under the Lumding division. As per the NFR CPRO, installation of the IDS in both these sections of railway routes have yielded positive results.
NF Railways is the first zone in Indian Railways to use IDS technology to address the issue of elephant deaths due to train hits.
Death of elephants due to train hits had been a major issue in the region, particularly in Assam and North Bengal. As per records available with NF Railways, in 2020 and in 2021, eight elephants had died due to train hits.
In the current year 2022, till now 7 elephants had died on similar grounds. De also stated that due to the installation of IDS, the movement of other animals too can be detected.
