NIT Silchar students brutally thrash cooks on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone

By Bikram Sarkar

A horrifying incident of violence has surfaced at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar in Assam, where three cooks were brutally assaulted by a group of students on charges of stealing a mobile phone. The incident occurred on July 26 at Hostel No. 9 of the Institute and came to light after a video capturing the savage attack went viral on various social media platforms.

According to reports, a student residing in Hostel No. 4 reported that his mobile phone had gone missing, which led to the suspicion that it might have been stolen. Subsequently, a section of rogue students took matters into their own hands and rounded up three cooks named Biki Ri, Mona Das, and Rajkumar Dhaushad, who were employed at the hostels. The cooks were then forcibly taken to Hostel No. 9 in a car.

Inside the hostel, the situation escalated into a violent frenzy, with the students subjecting the three cooks to merciless assault, accusing them of theft. Disturbing video footage has surfaced that reveals the cooks being repeatedly beaten with sticks, kicked, and punched, while two security personnel present at the scene seemingly stood idle, not intervening to protect the victims.

As a result of the brutal attack, all three cooks suffered grievous injuries and were rushed to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for immediate medical attention.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Rajkumar Dusad, one of the assaulted cooks said that they had approached the Institute’s authorities immediately after the attack. However, despite assurances, no substantial steps have been taken to address the matter or ensure justice for the victims. Dusad recounted how the security personnel present during the assault ignored their pleas for help, leaving them defenceless against the wrath of the students.
