NIA, Assam Police, other central agencies to probe blasts in Eastern Assam: Assam DGP

A team of the NIA will be reaching Assam soon to probe the 3 blasts in Eastern Assam since November 22, including last evening’s blast outside the military station in Jorhat, Assam DGP GP Singh said today stating that the Assam Police will work in close co-ordination with the NIA as well as other central security agencies to probe the blasts.

Reiterating the government’s Zero Tolerance policy against violence, DGP Singh said that the perpetrators will face tough action.

Significantly, the DGP said that those love Assam are hurting their own motherland, after the ULFA-I claimed responsibility of last night’s blast in Jorhat.

The DGP said, “Those people who love Assam, they are hurting (carrying out blasts) it. I am unable to ascertain (who are behind such acts) and I do not want to comment much.

But whoever is involved will be identified, we are already in touch with the NIA, their team is also coming. We will discuss about the blasts with the NIA and other central agencies. We will certainly find out whoever is involved and the strongest possible action will be taken.”

Asked about what he had to say since the ULFA-I has claimed responsibility for the blast, DGP Singh said, “Those people who are saying that they love Assam, but they are hurting their own motherland, so they should think about this. The people of Assam should also question them as to why they are doing so.”

The Assam DGP said that it will be the people who will be at the receiving end if the police force is engaged in anti-terrorist operations rather than handling cases of corruption, forgery and other general crimes.

DGP GP Singh mentioned that the police has been able to bring down cases of crime for which people have benefitted the most.

The Assam DGP in this context stated, “in the past few months whatever important cases have occured like busting of fake call centers in Guwahati, fresh arrests made regarding the APSC cash-for-job scam. Those things we are doing. If such incidents (blasts) happen, we will have to divert our personnel who are engaged in crackdown on corruption. People will be at loss if this happens.

We have been able to reduce incidents of crime, the conviction rate was once 5%, it has now reached 16% till November. If we engage the police force in finding out bombs than people will be at loss.”
Eastern Assam has been rocked by as many as 3 explosions in less than a month. After the explosions in Tinsukia and Sibsagar, the ULFA-Independent has claimed responsibility for the blast outside military station in Jorhat last evening.
