Most cases against NDFB, NLFB likely to be withdrawn in next 6 months: Assam DGP

Assam DGP GP Singh today informed that maximum cases registered against ex-cadres of different rebel groups (disbanded) including the NDFB and NLFB are likely to be withdrawn in the next 6 months. The Assam top cop informed that deliberations are on with the Centre in terms of withdrawal of cases which are with the CBI or NIA.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already reached out to his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Pema Khandu for the needful regarding withdrawal of cases against former rebels of the NDFB and NLFB.

Sharing details with newspersons, DGP GP Singh said, “The cases in which there are no social hindrances and if it is not related to serious offences like targeting the army or the police and likewise, I am in support of withdrawal of such cases. I have conveyed my views to the Home department and the ADGP SB (Special Branch). But in some cases the NIA or the CBI are the prosecution agencies. Since those are central agencies it is necessary that there is an acceptance or approval of Centre (regarding withdrawal of such cases), we are in talks regarding that. In addition to that there are certain cases against the NDFB and the NLFB which are registered in Arunachal Pradesh. Regarding that the Assam Chief Minister has already written a letter to his Arunachal counterpart, and hopefully it will be settled (cases will be withdrawn). We are moving in the right direction, but it takes some time since case studies have to be done, what will be the consequences need to be studied, there is a committee which looks into it. I think that in the next 6 months we will be able to withdraw most of the cases not only against the NDFB, NLFB but also other groups.”
Assam DGP GP Singh in a strong message, said that terrorism or other criminal activities will not be tolerated at any cost. He said, “We will not allow any kind of terrorism, anti-social, criminal activities to happen in Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s instruction is very clear, the Union Home Minister (Amit Shah) has also mentioned similar thing.”

GP Singh added that all out efforts are being made to recover weapons belonging to different groups which have been kept concealed instead of surrendering them before the police.

The Assam DGP said, “You have seen in last 2 to 2 and half years we have been able to recover weapons from Bodo, Karbi and Dimasa areas regularly. We are virtually digging every inch of land to extract all kinds of weapons, if it has been concealed, we are making efforts to make more such recoveries. I am 100% sure that we will be successful in that.”
