Meitei Manipuris flee from Mizoram, take refuge in Assam

Hundreds of Meiteis have taken shelter in Cachar district of Assam after they fled from Mizoram following an order from a pressure group asking them to ensure their own safety

Over 45 Meitei Manipuris who had taken shelter in Mizoram over the past few months, had fled the state last night and have taken shelter in Cachar district of Assam. This after a notification from Peace Accord MNF Returnees Association (PAMRA) asked them to be careful and take care of their safety and security in the wake of the viral video showing two women paraded naked and one of them gang raped.
The notification had created a lot of confusion and scare among the Meiteis in Mizoram. PAMRA is a Mizoram based pressure group.
Relief camps were being set up at Binnakandi area of Lakhipur where more than 45 people have taken refuge and in few relief camps at Sonai constituency where over 80 people are staying and many are still in transit. These camps are in Cachar district of Assam.
Speaking to Northeast Live one victim lady claimed, “There is fear situation after a Mizo civil society send a representative to the Manipuri Metei representative body asking all the Meitei people living in Mizoram to leave the state. Our representative told that there are more than 2000 Metei Manipuris residing in Mizoram. We requested them to give us 24 hours of time to leave the state.”
The All Assam Manipur Students Association (AAMSU) is helping set up relief camps in Cachar’s Sonai town.
Meanwhile, AAMSU General Secretary, Swapan Singh releasing a press note advised the people of Mizoram staying in Assam to leave the area for their own safety.
“Today the AAMSU we are giving statement that Mizos who are living in Barak valley area should move from this area for their safety. We are not giving warning but advising them to move here from as soon as possible,” Singh added.
AAMSU has urged the Cachar district administration to provide relief camp to the refugees as soon as possible.
