Assam: Massive clearance drive launched in 2,500 bighas of Tea Estate in Cachar

The Cachar district administration has launched a massive clearance drive in the Dolu Tea Estate, deploying as many as 200 excavators. The clearance drive is being carried out by a team

The Cachar district administration has launched a massive clearance drive in the Dolu Tea Estate, deploying as many as 200 excavators. The clearance drive is being carried out by a team led by Special DGP (Law and Order) GP Singh.

As per inputs, the clearance drive has been launched after tea garden labourers planted saplings in 2,500 bighas of land, protesting against the construction of the much anticipated Greenfield Airport.

It may be mentioned here that the tea garden labourers have taken strong exceptions to setting up of the Greenfield Airport despite the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the tea garden management, garden unions and district administration in March this year.

The MoU stated that cultivation of tea leaves could be done in the other part of the land and not in the portion allocated for the airport. However, as per reports, 30 lakh saplings have already been cleared by the administration as part of the eviction projects.

Notably, the administration has imposed section 144 in the area to ensure there is no untoward incident of violence. Additionally, a large troop of security forces has also been deployed across the area.

Meanwhile, Cachar SP Ramandeep Kaur stated that clearance of tea estate is being done in line with the MoU and any grievances should be taken up with the government.

Further, Kaur said that the creating a ruckus and stopping operations of the administration will not lead to any solution.
