Assam: Bodies of 3 killed in Kopili Hydel tragedy recovered

Bodies of the three who were killed in a tragic incident at NEEPCO’s Kopili Hydroelectric Project in the 5 Kilo area of Dima Hasao district of Assam have been recovered.

Three persons including 2 top officials of the Kopili Hydro electric project under NEEPCO lost their lives after water overflowed from the reservoir of the hydel power project this morning.

The deceased have been identified as Jayanta Hazarika Manager of the Civil branch, Anupam Saikia Deputy Manager (Civil) and Dimaraj Johri, who was a contractual employee of the NEEPCO.

The deceased were heading to close the intake gate of the reservoir when the incident took place.

The exact location of the tragedy site is said to be in the 5 kilo area.

It may be mentioned that incessant rainfall led to a rise in the water level downstream following which the intake level at the reservoir crossed the permitted limit.

As per sources, maintenance work was going on at the site for some time now but heavy rains in Meghalaya led to a sudden increase in water levels.
