The Child Welfare Committee as well as the police has taken strong cognizance of the matter

In a shocking incident, a new born infant was abandoned by a bike-borne couple in Eastern Assam’s Jorhat district. The incident happened this morning.

The couple, who came in a two-wheeler, stopped near a 17-year old boy who was standing by the roadside, called him and asked him to hold the baby. The young lad held the baby and the very next minute the couple was gone. The young boy was left stunned and shocked, left holding a new born.

Narrating the horrific incident, the young boy said, “I had gone to the market. I was standing there when a couple came on a two-wheeler and told me to hold the infant wrapped in a piece of cloth. The woman asked me to hold the baby. I did so as I thought that she might be facing difficulties in stepping down from the 2-wheeler. Even before I could hold the baby, the next thing I saw was the couple fled within seconds of handing the baby to me. I did not know what to do. I immediately informed my mother. She told me that we will have to go to the police station and report it”.

Following this, the infant was taken to the Baghchung Primary Health Centre. The police were informed about the matter.

An official of the Jorhat Child Welfare Committee (CWC) said that the infant is now at Swaraj (Specialized Adoption Agency) in Rajamoidam. “We will follow the appropriate adoption procedures. We will strictly look into every aspect before any adoption issue,” the official said.
