Assam witnessed a historic milestone today with the Bhumi Pujan for the Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor plant, the largest investment project in Northeast India. The groundbreaking ceremony took place at the project site in Jagiroad, approximately 50 km from Guwahati, marking the commencement of work on this mega plant poised to elevate Assam’s status on the global stage alongside semiconductor giants such as the US, Japan, China, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran were present at the ceremony, performing rituals amidst the chanting of hymns by priests from various regions of the country. A 3-D model of the facility was also unveiled by the chief minister on this momentous occasion.
The plant, spread over 160 acres, is projected to generate over 29,000 jobs and play a significant role in India’s ambition to secure a substantial share of the global chip-making market, anticipated to be worth $2,062 billion by 2032. The facility is expected to start rolling out chips next year, with a production capacity of 48 million chips per day. The first phase of the project is set to be operational by March 2025.
In a statement on X, the Chief Minister’s Office remarked, “Today is a historic day for Assam as Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will perform the Bhumi Pujan of the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility at Jagiroad. Once operational, it will transform the industrial landscape of Assam and herald a new era of growth.”
Taking to X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated after the Bhumi Pujan, “Assam is set to become the next global electronic hub. With the blessings of Maa Kamakhya, Srimanta Sankardev, and our people, I performed the Bhumi Pujan of the Tata Semiconductor facility in Jagiroad along with Chairman of Tata Sons, Shri N Chandrasekaran. This ₹27,000 cr plant has an employment potential of over 27,000 jobs and will attract a world-class industrial ecosystem that will spur India’s quest to become a global leader in new age tech.”
The global semiconductor market size was valued at USD 544.78 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach around USD 1,137.57 billion by 2033, poised to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.64% during the forecast period 2024 to 2033, as per Precedence Research, a company that provides strategic market insights and is based out of Canada and India.
The Tata semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad will be India’s first indigenous semiconductor assembly and test facility, focusing initially on three key platform technologies—wire bond, flip chip, and integrated systems packaging (ISP)—with plans for future expansion into advanced packaging technologies.
The facility is designed to meet the rising global demands across key market segments, including AI, industrial, and consumer electronics. This initiative is part of the Centre’s semiconductor policy, driven by the India Semiconductor Mission and supported by the Assam government’s electronics policy, and is expected to significantly boost industrialization in Northeast India.
