The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged dominant with the bigger mandate in the 2022 Guwahati Municipal Election after sweeping the elections with 58 seats.
After the massive victory, state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita took a dig at the grand old party who failed to win a single seat in the GMC polls.
Kalita said, “People won’t vote for Congress. They are like the Rs 2 note which has expired its validity, Congress is big zero now. And it’s not us but the people of Assam who will make them a big zero.”
“I thanked the people of the city who have blessed our CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP party with their precious votes,” he further added.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also gave his perspective on the GMC poll results. “I already said that there are no seats for the Congress party however things will only be clear after the counting concludes.”
Further responding to the victory of the AJP and AAP, Chief Minister Sarma said, “It was evident that both the parties would have won in their respective wards”.
In a comprehensive win, the BJP party has won 58 seats in the civic polls out of 60 wards. Meanwhile, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have won one seat each.
In total, 197 candidates are in the fray in 57 wards, whereas BJP candidates in three wards have already been elected uncontested.
A total of 757 polling stations have been put up for this election, with 80 polling stations being conducted solely by women polling officials.
