It seems to be a cause of grave concern, as the Police Commissioner maintained that along with few other districts, Guwahati too has come in the grasp of drugs.
Is Assam fast becoming the hotbed of drugs smuggling? The seizure of narcotics consignments worth close to Rs 1000 crore in a single year does not augur well for the state. What is even more alarming is the fact that, of the Rs 781 crore drugs seized, the maximum amount of Rs 400 crore was seized from Guwahati, the gateway to the entire Northeast. These are the figures of seizure in 2022.

Briefing newspersons, Guwahati Commissioner of Police, Diganta Barah lauded the successful efforts of the Guwahati Police in tackling the drug menace. Barah said, “You will be surprised to know, that the market value of the drugs seized in Guwahati (2022) is more than Rs 407 crore.”

Heroin-11.973 kg

It seems to be a cause of grave concern, as the Police Commissioner maintained that along with few other districts, Guwahati too has come in the grasp of drugs.
“The Assam Police have swung into action to bust the racket behind the drugs trade in the state. The Guwahati Police is also co-ordinating in operations against the racket and have achieved considerable success,” Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah said.

The Police Commissioner has sought further co-operation from the people in the War Against Drugs.
“We (Police) are committed to create a drugs free society for the future generation, and we are moving ahead in this direction,” the Guwahati Commissioner of Police added.

111 kg Heroin
48000 kg Ganja
62 lakh Yaba tablets

214 kg Opium
Excluding the sea route, this is one of the largest ever hauls made in the entire country, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

It was indeed a year of success for the Himanta Biswa Sarma government in its War on Drugs. During his interaction with senior journalists on the first day of the New Year, the Assam Chief Minister said the police was able to recover drugs worth whopping Rs 781 crore last year as compared to Rs 400 crore in 2021.
“It is not that so much drugs is consumed in Assam, but the state is being used as corridor. By seizing the drugs in Assam, we are discharging a national obligation. Assam Police is contributing towards the nation,” Chief Minister Sarma added.

Besides, Chief Minister Sarma had also added that under the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Assam Police is working in close tandem with central agencies. “We have created a grid between the central agencies and the Assam Police,” the Chief Minister had informed.
It may be mentioned, Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Guwahati on October 7 and chaired a regional meeting next day on ‘Drug Trafficking & National Security’ to discuss the drug situation in the Northeast region & ways to mitigate it.
