Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani re-arrested after court grants bail

Gujarat Congress leader Jignesh Mevani has been re-arrested by the Assam Police on Monday after another case was registered at the Barpeta Police station. Mevani was granted bail on Monday

Gujarat Congress leader Jignesh Mevani has been re-arrested by the Assam Police on Monday after another case was registered at the Barpeta Police station.

Mevani was granted bail on Monday morning by a Kokrajhar CJM court on a bail bond of Rs 30,000.

The MLA was arrested by a team of Kokrajhar police from Gujarat’s Palanpur last week after a local BJP leader from Kokrajhar filed a complaint against him.

The Gujarat Congress MLA has been arrested in connection with the case over posting derogatory tweets against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Following a police complaint filed by Anup Kumar Dey, a resident of Bhabanipur in the Kokrajhar district of Assam, a case was filed against Mevani under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act.

Mevani was charged with criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity between communities, causing intentional insult to provoke breach of peace, and violations of the Information Technology Act.

Jignesh Mevani, an Independent MLA from Gujarat’s Vadagam constituency who is also a Dalit leader, was arrested by the Assam police on Wednesday night and transferred to the state of Assam the following day.

BJP leader Amit Shah filed a complaint against the 41-year-old lawyer-turned-politician, alleging that his tweets about Prime Minister Narendra Modi were defamatory.

The lawyer-turned-politician, who has ties but no formal links to the Congress, was arrested. Mevani was taken into custody from a Circuit House in Palampur, Gujarat, at approximately 11:30 pm.
