GMCH Doctors Allegedly Assaulted by Youths Over Accident Victim’s Death

The attacker accused the medical staff of neglecting timely treatment, which they claimed led to the victim’s death.

At a time when massive nationwide protests are going on demanding the safety and security of doctors and medical staff in hospitals and medical colleges, a team of junior doctors at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) were allegedly assaulted by a group of youths late last night over the death of a patient at the hospital.

As per inputs, a violent altercation broke out between doctors and a group of youths at the hospital premises after the patient who had been brought to GMCH after a road accident died while undergoing treatment.

The attackers accused the medical staff of starting the treatment late and losing valuable time, which they claimed led to the victim’s death.

Their anger escalated into a physical attack on the junior doctors.

However, a staff member from GMCH speaking to the media said that the victim was admitted to the hospital by the police without any identification. Despite that, the medical team promptly attended the patient.

The staff member said that the accusations of neglect were baseless, as the medical team had acted swiftly and professionally, given the constraints of the situation.

Police have arrested 5 youths in connection with the assault.
