GMC poll campaign concludes, BJP upbeat, battle of prestige for Congress

With the city ready to go for polls for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation on April 22, the high decibel poll campaign ended on Wednesday with party leaders trying to woo

With the city ready to go for polls for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation on April 22, the high decibel poll campaign ended on Wednesday with party leaders trying to woo the last remaining voters.

Several leaders of the BJP, Congress, and, other parties took part in the last-minute campaign.

Taking a jibe at the Congress party, BJP’s Pijush Hazarika said that this is the last battle of prestige for Congress.

“Campaigning by BJP and Congress parties have been going in on full swing since the last few days. While the GMC polls have become a last remaining battle of prestige for the Congress, more so, after its devastating performance in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha polls, the BJP, on the other hand, has been making steady headway with chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma leading the party’s campaign trail from the front,” Hazarika commented.

Meanwhile, a total of 208 candidates are in the fray in the forthcoming Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Election, 2022 to be held on April 22.

Three BJP candidates have won ‘uncontested’ in the polls in wards 5, 6, and 22.

The Congress has fielded candidates in 55 wards, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 39 wards, and the AGP in seven.

It may be mentioned that 50% of wards are reserved for women candidates at this time of the GMC Election, 2022.

There are 780 polling booths, where 797807 voters will cast their votes. Among them, 397128. are male, 400654 are female and 26 are registered under the third gender.

The time of casting the vote is fixed from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm.
