Flood situation in Assam worsens; Govt springs into action

Rescue operations have been underway on a war footing in Hojai with security forces using rescue boats to evacuate stranded villagers.

The rising water levels of the Kapili river in Hojai have inundated several prime locations. Over 100 villages are still reeling in floodwaters, forcing locals to stay indoors.

Meanwhile, Assam Minister Keshab Mahanta, accompanied by Hojai MLA Ramkrishna Ghosh and Lumding MLA Shibu Mishra, visited the affected area to take stock of the situation. He assured of all possible assistance to the affected people.

Meanwhile, National Highway 15, the lifeline of the people on the Northern bank of the Brahmaputra has been closed due to the prevailing flood situation.

The road has been closed after the Saktola river embankment in Darrang District has been washed away after which the road was waterlogged.

Water levels have also increased in many places along National Highway 15 for which the administration has decided to close the highway.

The passengers traveling to Udalguri, Sonitpur, and Darrang districts have been asked to immediately cancel their trips and return back.

Similar is the scene in Silchar where floods triggered by Jiri, Jatinga, and Dhaleshwar, the subsidiaries of Barak River are wreaking havoc, flowing above the danger level. As many as four people are dead, and many others are reportedly missing. The administration has installed more than 40 camps.

Massive landslides in the National Highway number 6 have cut off communication between other states such as Tripura and Mizoram.

Meanwhile, the district administration held a meeting last night to assess the situation.

And not just in the hill districts, but landslides have been reported in Guwahati city too. Massive landslides have been reported from Guwahati’s Ulubari area in the South Sarania area. Residents are in a state of panic owing to the situation.

The guard wall of the Matri temple has collapsed in the landslide.
