Assam: Eminent flautist Prabhat Sarma passes away at 86

Prabhat Sarma, a renowned flautist and musician from Assam, passed away on Tuesday morning at his residence in Guwahati creating a void in the state’s cultural arena. He was 86.

Tributes poured in following the death of the musician. His death was mourned by many, including Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Sonowal, taking to Twitter, expressed his condolences to the departed soul’s family and prayed for the eternal peace of his soul.
Sarma is survived by his wife and daughter Tarali Sarma, who is also an acclaimed singer from the state.
During his lifetime he was bestowed with many honors and was one of the recipients of Assam’s artist pension.
In 2004, Sarma was conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi award for his immense contributions to the field of arts. In 2000, he was honoured by Assam Sahitya Sabha, the state’s apex literary body. Again, in 2001, he was honoured by the Assam government.
The maestro was born and brought up in Sundaridiya Satra, Barpeta. He was born on July 7, 1935.
