Economic Refugees Are Coming To India From Bangladesh Due To Unrest: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma infromed that three people were pushed back to Bangladesh yesterday while attempting to enter Assam illegally.

In the wake of political unrest in neighboring Bangladesh, the Assam government has beefed up security along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Karimganj, where over 40 infiltration bids have been thwarted since August 5.

Speaking to the media in Guwahati today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma infromed that three people were pushed back to Bangladesh yesterday while attempting to enter Assam illegally.

“Three persons of Bangladeshi origin were pushed back to Bangladesh yesterday at 5 am while they were trying to enter Assam illegally. The individuals have been identified as Mohammad Zubair Sheikh, Jewel Sheikh, and Ruma Khatun,” Chief Minister Sarma said.

“We will be deploying additional police forces in Karimganj today to stop further infiltration attempts,” the Chief Minister added.

Sarma also noted that Bangladeshi infiltrators are being pushed back by the Tripura government and the BSF as well.

“It was initially believed that there would be an increase in Hindu influx due to the unrest in Bangladesh. However, we have observed a surge in Muslim influx instead,” the Chief Minister further explained.

Chief Minister Sarma said that the infiltrators, when interrogated, revealed their intention to join the textile industry in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

“The infiltrators disclosed that they left Bangladesh due to the struggling textile industry there, where they were employed. Their primary destination is Coimbatore. I would request the Tamil Nadu government to conduct a background check on those recently recruited in the textile industry in Coimbatore,” Chief Minister Sarma said, adding that he will soon write to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin to highlight the issue.

“We expected Hindus to come to India; however, the reverse is happening. Political refugees are not coming to India, but economic refugees are entering the country,” the Chief Minister concluded.
