Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, NE’s ‘Chanakya’ proves his mettle in 1st year as CM
His performance in the past 1 year shows that CM Sarma not only enjoyed the challenge but made it look simpler.
Chief Minister Sarma continued doing what he does best. It is about the political acumen of the BJP’s Chanakya who ensured that the ruling coalition grew from strength to strength.
BJP and allies swept the by-polls in all 6 seats and followed it up with thumping Rajya Sabha and urban body polls victories.
Not only did Sarma single-handedly ensure these victories but also reduced the opposition Congress to a near non-entity thus quelling all political opposition in the state.
Assam is on a fast track mode to development. The completion of infra projects ahead of time, boost to health infra, setting the roadmap to convert Guwahati into a mega-city, spread on either side of the Brahmaputra, in the quickest possible time, crackdown on crime and drugs
The focus is primarily on consolidation of the peace process and political stability, ensuring better governance to improve the ease of living, and, creating the right atmosphere and infrastructure to trigger economic growth.
The job is easier said than done. Assamese politics is divided into various groups and sub-groups along the lines of ethnic identity and language. Such divisions are also the source of unrest in the region.
As the largest state in the northeast and strategic in terms of geography, Assam’s share of concerns is bigger.
Sarma is trying to address the problem from the root. In the past, peace accords proved fragile due to intra-community rivalry. If one group agreed to join the mainstream, another faction from the same ethnic identity disagreed.
When Sarma was elevated as Chief Minister in May 2021, in the second term of the BJP government, which had been in power since 2016, the primary challenge for him was to be distinct in approach without much scope to blame the past governments.
In short, he was under the scanner from day one and didn’t have the advantage of making promises without accountability.
His performance in the past 1 year shows that Sarma not only enjoyed the challenge but made it look simpler.
