Don’t care about such threats, will hit back if anyone indulges in extortion or tries to disrupt peace in state: Assam DGP

By Bikram Sarkar

Assam DGP GP Singh today rubbished threats issued by the banned ULFA-Independent (I) asking him to leave Assam at the earliest, and said that throughout his career as a cop, he has received several such threats from many organisations from across the country. The Assam top cop instead hit back and affirmed strong action against anyone found indulging in acts of extortion or demands or anyone trying to disturb the peace and development of Assam.

“Throughout my career, I have received such threats from several such organisations from across India. I have been receiving such threats for the last 15-20 years. I do not think there is any significance (to the threat from ULFA-I). The government is paying me to do my job and I am doing it,” the DGP said.

Sounding firm and strong and without mincing words, the DGP further said, “The other thing that I want to tell everyone is that if anyone tries to disturb the peace and development of Assam that the Hon’ble Assam CM is trying to maintain, by way of extortion, by way of demands, whether its genuine or fake, I won’t let it happen. I am very clear on that. Whatever action is needed to be taken to curb the menace of extortion and demands and whenever someone hampers the development of Assam we will take very strong action (against them),” DGP Singh said.

The Assam DGP’s sharp reaction comes in the backdrop of the ULFA-I issuing a statement accusing the top cop of orchestrating fake encounters by framing innocent indigenous people.

The ULFA-I had issued the statement after a suspected linkman of the ULFA-I was injured during an exchange of fire between suspected cadre and police in Assam’s Dibrugarh district yesterday.
Another woman linkman of the ULFA-I was also apprehended by a joint team of the Army and police in Dibrugarh district.

In the statement the ULFA-I had asked the DGP to ‘refrain’ from such activities or else leave Assam.
“Whatever power law has entrusted upon the police, the police is executing the action in accordance with that. For monitoring the appropriate execution of the power there are internal units, Human Rights Commission (HRC) is there in Assam as well as at the national level and the Court is also there. We will reply at the appropriate level. I want to clearly say that we are executing actions at par with the power entrusted by the law,” the DGP said reacting to allegations of fake encounters.
