Assam CM again urges ULFA-I to join talks table

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today once again batted for permanent peace in the state. Chief Minister Sarma once again appealed ULFA Commander-in-Chief Paresh Baruah to come to the talks table and iniate a peace process. Chief Minister Sarma appealed Paresh Baruah to shun the path of violence and embrace the path of peace through dialogue for building a New Assam.

The Assam Chief Minsiter hopes that someday the government will be holding talks with the ULFA-I and everything will be resolved through proper dialogues.

Prior to this, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the the Dimasa National Liberation Army or the DNLA has already begun talks with the Centre as well as the Government of Assam. Sarma believes that the DNLA will sign a Peace Accord with the government soon.

Himanta Biswa Sarma futher added that more than 6700 rebels have joined the mainstream within a span of 1.5 years, since he assumed office as the Chief Minister, who have already been rehabilitated. Sarma also urged concerned officials to expedite the process of rehabilitating the remaining ex-rebels so that they can avail the benefits of government rehabilitation program. The Assam Chief Minister was attending an event regarding the Rehabilitation package distribution to ex-rebels.

The Assam Chief Minister today handed over one-time grant of Rs 1.5 lakh to at least 318 former rebels of different outlawed groups as part of the government’s Rehabilitation Package.

The beneficiaries included- 127 ex-rebels of United Gorkha Peoples Organisation, 74 of Tiwa Liberation Army, 38 from the Kuki national Liberation Army, 33 of KLF, 35 from ULFA-I and 11 from Dimasa National Liberation Army.
