Union Minister Kiren Rijiju hailed the decision to reduce ambit of AFSPA in three Northeast states as historic. Rijiju added that a lot of steps have been taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to bring peace to the region. This decision, he said, shows that the era of peace has arrived in the Northeast.
Talking to Northeast Live, national spokesperson of BJP Mmhonlumo Kikon, who hails from Nagaland, said that it was a welcome step by the Centre which has always remained committed for ushering peace and tranquility in the region.
On the other hand the Naga People’s Front has also welcomed the Centre’s move to withdraw AFSPA. Achumbemo Kikon also added that AFSPA was doing little towards promoting democracy.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma who has been vocal against AFSPA of late has also hailed the decision. He said that the demand for withdrawing AFSPA from the Northeast is a long pending demand and the centre’s move is a positive move in that direction.
